Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Security Engineer to help safeguard the University’s digital assets and infrastructure from ever-evolving cyber threats. The Security Engineer will conduct proactive threat assessments, stay current with emerging cyber threats and vulnerabilities, and develop and execute incident response plans to prevent, mitigate and recover from security breaches.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the firewall supplier and changes & MACs (Moves, Adds, Changes).
  • Manage the antivirus, the Intrusion Detection System, and the Vulnerability Management System.
  • Ensuring security systems are robust and reliable.
  • Co-ordination and participation in the on-call roster.
  • Helping to monitor and manage any intrusion attempts/threats to the University.
  • Providing support to members of the Security Team.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

This position will focus primarily on the day-to-day aspects of the University’s Cyber Security, ensuring that the IT infrastructure is protected from internal and external security threats.

Key Requirements:

  • Demonstratable experience in a Cybersecurity related role and ideally have exposure to security technologies such as CrowdStrike, Azure, Sentinel, Check Point, Palo Alto, Fortinet etc.
  • Proven ability to establish policies and procedures and create appropriate documentation.
  • A solid understanding of networks, firewalls, proxies, SIEM, Endpoint controls, DLP concepts and technologies.
  • Experience & expertise with Fortinet, Cisco, Microsoft, Azure and SIEM products.
  • A sound knowledge and understanding of Operating Systems, Networking, Applications, and enterprise services.
  • Exposure to Security Orchestration and Automation, Threat Intelligence or Threat Hunting are highly regarded.
  • The ability to work under pressure and think on your feet to solve problems.
