Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Research Computing Specialist to join the Faculty of Engineering on a permanent bases to support the High-Performance Computing services at the University. This role also works closely with the Digital Services who oversee the Raapoi research computing facility.

This role will help the University achieve its goals by ensuring that advanced research computing facilities are designed and made available to support the successful delivery of modern data-intensive research, and by providing expertise to researchers, students, and other staff to support teaching and research programmes who utilise high performance and innovative technology to achieve their goals. This role will be expected to deliver training to academics, post-graduate students and professional staff on modern research methodologies and tools.

You will be a motivated, highly technical professional with an interest in research.

You will have excellent oral and written communication skills, good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

You will be a highly organised self-starter and natural relationship builder, who relishes working autonomously as well as contributing positively to a high performing team. You will have the ability to apply your skills across many context and research scenarios.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience in a DevOps environment, knowledge of configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, and/or Chef.
  • An interest in applications and infrastructure that enable research in data science, artificial intelligence, and digital humanities.
  • Proven experience in managing High Performance Computing environments, especially scheduling environments such as Slurm.
  • In-depth functional and technical knowledge of research technology and methodologies.
  • Experience building and compiling scientific software stacks.
  • Experience using GPUs for computational tasks, such as pytorch, tensorflow.
  • Applied experience in using the Linux shell.
