Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Pūkenga | Lecturer in Japanese. The role is situated in the Asian Languages and Cultures Programme of the School of Languages and Cultures and involves responsibility for teaching, researching and publishing in Japanese Studies.

We are excited to welcome a scholar expert in any area of Japanese Studies to the Asian Languages and Cultures Programme. The role involves teaching into the Japanese major in the Bachelor of Arts. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to some of the School’s other offerings in Asian Studies, Intercultural Communication, Global Studies or Translation Studies.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have demonstrable expertise in Japanese Studies, and a PhD in that area.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and track record of scholarly publication.
  • Be able to teach Japanese language and culture effectively at all undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Be able to make a contribution to the School’s other course offerings, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collegially, contribute effectively to the administration of the Programme, and support our Programme and University obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The role will also involve developing courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, with support from the wider Programme, as well as supervising postgraduate students.

You will be motivated by a passion for Japanese language and culture and a desire to teach and research in this field. You will join a School committed to the role that languages and cultures play in a global society. You will have the opportunity to develop a community of scholars, students and wider networks of readers and writers in Japanese Studies and more broadly.

An engaged scholar and educator, you will be self-motivated and self-organised, working with a high degree of autonomy, and will support the collegiality and cooperative work of the Programme.

  • Demonstrated research expertise in Japanese Studies.
  • A record of successful teaching, particularly in Japanese language and culture.
  • An existing record of published academic research.
  • The ability to build positive and supportive relationships with colleagues.
  • The capacity to work as part of a team as well as having individual responsibilities.

Ētahi kōrero hai āwhina i a koe - Why you should join our team

Our team is responsible for teaching a range of language and culture courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as for providing expert supervision of postgraduates completing both taught and research Masters, and PhD qualifications. We aim to be a Programme offering students access to a wide range of literatures, histories, approaches and methods in language and cultural studies.

We combine this teaching and supervision with academic research. Our team includes specialists in a number of Asian, European and Pacific languages and cultures, many of whom also have a strong interest in Intercultural Communication, Global Studies and Literary Translation. We value our methodological and subject diversity, and our place in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city community and culture.

This vacancy, a permanent academic role, offers an opportunity for an emerging or established scholar to bring their individual strengths to Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington, to help our staff to extend our curriculum, and to develop their individual research profile.
